Don’t let anyone tell you it’s a man’s world. In South Africa’s agriculture sector, more women are stepping forward, breaking barriers, and building meaningful careers. One such story is that of Puleng Phahlane, Senior Administrator at Beefmaster Group, whose journey highlights how initiative, resilience, and a willingness to learn can shape long-term success.
From Feedlot Worker to Senior Administrator
At Beefmaster Group’s feedlot operations in Christiana, where machinery, logistics, and operational efficiency are key to food production, Puleng has built her career through determination and growth.
She joined the company in 2013 as a junior penrider, responsible for monitoring cattle in the feedlot’s adaptation unit. Her role required close observation of newly arrived animals to ensure they adjusted to their environment and feeding programmes.
Soon after, she moved to the irrigation department – a transition that could have limited her visibility. Instead, Puleng chose to stand out.
“I made a decision to become involved and make myself useful,” she explains.
Her proactive mindset led her to approach the irrigation manager and offer assistance. That initiative opened the door to a new opportunity: learning to operate a front-end loader under the guidance of the Fleet Operations Foreman.
Breaking Gender Barriers in Agriculture
Operating heavy machinery in a traditionally male-dominated agricultural environment was not without challenges. However, Puleng embraced the opportunity.
For three months, she operated the machine while learning on the job, taking feedback seriously and continuously improving her skills.
“I embraced the challenge wholeheartedly and saw it as a chance to grow,” she says.
This experience reinforced a powerful belief: opportunity should be defined by capability – not gender.
A Career Built on Growth and Opportunity
Puleng’s determination continued to open doors. In October 2014, she was asked to assist with office work after a position became available. She transitioned into a Junior Admin Assistant role, and by March 2016, she was promoted to Senior Administrator.
Today, she plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of feedlot operations. Her responsibilities include:
- Managing time and attendance records
- Coordinating employee inductions
- Processing job cards
- Supporting payroll administration
Her work ensures operational efficiency behind the scenes – an essential component of large-scale food production.
The Role of Workplace Culture in Career Development
Puleng credits her growth to the opportunities provided by Beefmaster Group, particularly those beyond her immediate job scope.
“The company supports employee development, even in areas not directly related to our roles,” she says.
She also values the company’s positive workplace culture and strong team connections, which make problem-solving and collaboration rewarding.
Supporting Food Security Through Agriculture
Beefmaster Group plays a critical role in South Africa’s food security by producing high-quality beef for both local and international markets. Employees like Puleng are part of a larger system that keeps the agricultural supply chain functioning efficiently.
